How You Can Get the Most out of Your Parent-Teacher Conference

Now that your children have settled into the new school year and have learned about their new teacher, it’s time for parents to do the same. To help you make the most of this important parent-teacher meeting, The Tutoring Center, Pearland has prepared the following post.

Create a List

Too many parents return home from their parent-teacher meeting and suddenly remember a multitude of items they wanted to speak with their child’s teacher about. Of course, by this time it’s too late. To prevent this from happening to you, make a list. Set aside some time and write down all of the items you want to speak with your child’s teacher about. These items could regard your child’s strengths, their weaknesses, which areas they particularly struggled in last year, right through to their career aspirations. Whatever you want to speak about, write it down.

Once you are confident that your list is complete, look through it carefully and prioritize it, moving the most important items to the top. Teachers will be meeting with many parents and often there won’t be enough time to speak about all of the items on your list. Prioritizing them helps to ensure you don’t return home without speaking about the most important items, as was mentioned earlier.

If the Teacher Can’t Help Then Don’t Bring It Up

Teachers can have a lot of input in the school and how it is run, however, there is much more which they can’t help with, and which needs to be directed to the appropriate person. If you have a concern with the way the school is being run or the state-set curriculum, it’s important that you don’t bring this up during your meeting as the teacher isn’t able to help and it can waste precious time. The last thing that you want to occur is that you spend 15 minutes complaining about something the teacher can’t assist you with and aren’t able to tick off items from your list.
