Help Your Child Reach Their Goals

As students begin to approach the end of the school year, it’s a good time for parents to sit down and check in on how they are progressing towards the goals they set earlier on in the school year. To help you make this a productive conversation, The Tutoring Center, Pearland has the below article for you to read.

Are They on Track?

Even if they haven’t told you, there is a good chance that your child set themselves one or a few goals at the start of the year, or their teacher set some for them. Either way, make some time to find out what these goals are and ask if your child is on track to achieve them. If you discover that your child has experienced a number of setbacks which have prevented them from likely achieving their goals, it’s important that you don’t let your child simply give up. As an example, if your child set a goal to read a series of books before the school year ends but is behind:
  • Help them rearrange their study and social time to allow them more opportunities to catch up on the reading they have missed.
  • Readjust or lower the goal to just two out of the three books in a series.
While the first option is preferable, lowering the goal to something achievable is better than giving up as this will be a lesson they will take into their adulthood.

Add New Complementary Goals

If your child, on the other hand, is on track to reach all of their goals and feels like they have additional time and resources to take on more, look for complementary goals. Continuing with the reading example above, once your child finished their series of books, search whether there are any other complementary books. Often, books written in a series will often spawn smaller, yet related books which further explain a character or a set of events. These can be a great way to slightly increase their goals without overwhelming them.
