Whether written during a lecture or regular classroom time, the quality of the notes a student takes determines how productive their follow-up study session will be.  To help your child get the most out of their studying, The Tutoring Center, Pearland TX has some information to share to help them take better notes.

Set Yourself up and Get Creative

The first place to start is with your note-taking items. Items like notebooks, a selection of colored pens, colored highlighters, regular pencil, and a ruler should all be considered. Colored pens and highlighters are great ways to separate or categorize notes. Once you have these, get creative with your notebooks. Cover them with your favorite pop group or celebrity to make them personal. If you can, try and find pictures which relate to the study subject.

Take Good Notes

Now that you have everything, it is important that you take high-quality notes to get the most out of your studying. Consider these tips:
  • Listen Carefully
    • The most important thing you can do is to pay attention. If you are in a lecture, the lecturer is unlikely to repeat information, so don't miss out on important information.
  • Don't Take Dictation
    • It is impractical for any student to write every word the teacher says. Instead, pay attention to dates, times, landmarks, historic landmarks, etc.
  • Review Your Notes
    • Review your notes as soon as you get home, while the information is fresh in your mind. If possible, compare your notes with a classmate to correct and expand information.

Keep Your Notes Clean

Taking messy notes makes study time unnecessarily difficult. Instead, keep these tips in mind:
  • Each Lesson Starts on a New Page
    • Even if it means leaving most of the previous page blank, if you are starting a new lesson or class, start a new page.
  • Speaking of Space
    • Don't try to save space in your notebook. It should be as expansive as it needs to be. For that reason, leave space after each set of notes for any corrections or additions.
  • Multiple Pages?
    • If your notes continue over multiple pages, number each page to keep everything together.
  • What's the Date?
    • The easiest way to find notes is by the date you took them. For this reason, write the date at the top of each page.
  • Write Well!
    • None of these tips will be any good if you can't read what you have written. It doesn't need to look perfect,  but you do need to be able to understand it later.
